The International Committee to Free the Cuban Five political prisoners in the United States, convened today to perform on Thursday, May 5, a new world campaign for the release of these patriots. The fifth day of each month, a greater number of people send emails, faxes and telegrams to U.S. President Barack Obama, demanding the release, the group said in a statement quoted by news agency Prensa Latina. In this day will come two new elements, since, on April 25 the U.S. Government asked the Miami Federal Court to reject the application for habeas corpus of Gerardo Hernández, sentenced to two life sentences plus 15 years.
In the case of Antonio Guerrero Rodríguez a similar request was also made (three days later), for a writ of habeas corpus. In the re-sentencing hearing, in August 2009, he received a sentence of 21 years and 10 months in prison.
Gerardo and Antonio, along with Ramon Labañino, Fernando González and René González were arrested on September 12, 1998 and tried in Miami in 2001 for monitoring anti-Cuba terrorist organizations based in Florida, which have the consent of Washington.
