To force Rene Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five, to stay in U.S. territory for three years more after his release from prison, is an additional deliberate reprisal, driven by the same political motivations that characterized the whole process against these Cuban patriots, Granma newspaper stated on Wednesday.

In an editorial entitled "New U.S. injustice against the Cuban Five," the daily explained that Gonzalez will be released from prison on Oct. 7 after having completed the brutal and unjust sentence imposed on him.

The daily stated that on September 16, a Southern Florida district court judge, Joan A. Lenard denied a motion filed by Gonzalez on February 16, 2011, in which he requests permission to travel to Cuba and join his relatives there.
Once again Gonzalez is subject of another injustice, forced to stay in the United States for three years more under a regime of supervised "freedom", continues the editorial.

That decision, after 13 years in solitary confinement, constitutes an additional deliberate retaliation, driven by the same motivations of political revenge that characterized the whole judicial process against the Five back in 2001. Behind it is the Government of the United States, which for years has sheltered terrorism against Cuba, and protected terrorist organizations and individuals who reside in its territory, responsible for causing death, pain and suffering to thousands of Cubans, stressed the paper.

Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando Gonzalez and Rene Gonzalez have been subjected since 1998 to cruel and degrading treatments, the publication stated. They have also supported pressures and abuses, included the separation of their loved ones, with admirable fortitude, without the slightest concession in their convictions, character and exemplary behavior as prisoners, Granma asserted.

The judge’s response has no justification, and compels Gonzalez to stay in the U.S. southern state of Florida, where it is known that his life is in danger, surrounded by the most prominent anti-Cuban terrorist organizations and individuals, the daily stated.

In her ruling, the judge cited the sentence imposed on René in 2001, which included an absurd special requirement, which prohibits Rene after his release to “visit specific places associated with individuals or groups such as terrorists ...." One might wonder how it is possible to meet this requirement when at the same time they force Rene to reside alongside "individuals or groups such as terrorists," pointed up the text.

One might also ask, although the answer is already known, what motivates the U.S. government and legal system to issue a court ruling that protects "individuals or groups such as terrorists" who reside within its territory.

Although it is impossible to repair the injustice after years of unjust imprisonment and cruelty, the only minimally decent move for the U.S. government to make, would be to allow the immediate return of Rene to Cuba, and to end the vindictive sentences against Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio and Fernando, so they can finally return to their homeland, the journal resolved.

The fight for the freedom of Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and Rene is the cause of the entire Cuban nation. It is the commitment of an entire people against the injustice they suffer, its loyalty to those who defend their country with great courage and sacrifice. This fight will never end until we see them all back where they belong, alongside their loved ones and their people, the text concluded as saying.
