Bearing a veritable sea of flags along, hundreds of residents of Cuba's province of Holguin and members of international solidarity committees struggling for the release of the Cuban Five set off in a bicycle marathon to demand the freedom of the Cuban anti-terrorist activists unjustly imprisoned in the United States.
Chair of the Buena Vista Solidarity Committee (Liens, Austria) Stefan Kreen, who ratified his unconditional support for the struggle to liberate the Five, gave the marathon's starting call.
The bicycles set off for the Che Guevara Monument from the Calixto García park. The marathon saw itself threatened by rains, but, in the end, the sun prevailed.
Children, youths and adults got on their bicycles to participate in the marathon: there were work, toy and run-of-the-mill bicycles. The people of Holguin felt they could not turn a deaf ear to the call for the release of the Five, and felt that anything with two wheels sufficed to express their support for Cuba’s cause.Mountain bikes, Chinese bicycles, "forever" brands, off-roaders, bicycle taxis: all of these models and brands were there. Cuba awoke on two wheels, in defense of its revolution and of the Five and against terrorism.
Relatives of René, Gerardo, Ramón, Fernando and Antonio were also present, proud to see the efforts undertaken by the city. Between smiles and greetings, they expressed their gratitude and conveyed a message of faith, dignity and courage to the new generations.
The Colloquium, with over 300 attendees from 47 different countries, will see the participation of union leaders from the international community, jurists and diplomats accredited in Havana.
Interactive Internet Forum on the Cuban Five Begins
An interactive Internet forum will be one of the highlights of the 7th International Colloquium of Solidarity with the Cuban Five this Thursday in Holguin.
A panel composed of experts and relatives of the Five will answer questions posed by Internet users in an effort to inform the public about the latest developments in connection with anti-terrorist activists Fernando González, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and René González.
The first four are still serving sentences in the United States, after 13 years of unjust incarceration. René is now serving a 3-year supervised release.
A panel titled "The World Accuses Posada Carriles" will also begin today. The confessed terrorist freely walks the streets of Miami and other US cities where the far-right anti-Cuban mob has entrenched itself.
Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosh were the masterminds behind the mid-air bombing of a Cuban commercial airliner in October of 1976, a crime that claimed the lives of the 73 people on board.
This terrorist recruited equally murderous criminals from Central American countries to place bombs in hotels around Havana in 1997. One of these bombings resulted in the tragic death of Italian tourist Fabio DiCelmo.
