”I'll be completely happy when I have the opportunity to celebrate my birthday with my family and the Cuban Five,” said Elián González, at the end of the habitual demonstrations for the release of the Cuban Five antiterrorist fighters unjustly held in the United States since 1998.

Elian said that Gerardo Hernandez, Fernando Gonzalez, Ramon Labañino , Antonio Guerrero and Rene Gonzalez were sent to prison when the people of Cuba was fighting to get him back to the island, and they were not able to participate in that claim.  Now, Elian proudly raises his voice for their freedom and for truth to emerge.

As usual, every December 6, women from the city of Cardenas, in the western province of Matanzas, on behalf of all Cuban women, take the streets with flags and banners demanding the U.S. government the right of the Cuban Five’s relatives to be with them, as well as their immediate release.

In front of the Battle of Ideas Museum, Rosa Aurora Freijanes, Fernando's wife, thanked the women for their generous gesture, which began back in 1999 during the fight for the return of Elián, then kidnapped by the Miami-based extreme right-wing, and which has continued in solidarity with the cause of the Cuban Five.

Irma Sehwerert, René's mother, said her son is still a prisoner, because judge Leonard does not allow him to come back and be with his family and injustice persists also because U.S. authorities repeatedly deny Rene’s wife Olga Salanueva the permission to visit him in the United States.

Tuesday’s activities began with a special morning act in the Marcelo Salado Primary School, visited by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro some 12 years ago and, facing the empty desk of Elian, he said that the world would someday know the truth and the child would return to his nation.
 
The massive march of women joined the students of technical schools and conservatories who were celebrating the 41st anniversary of the creation of the Federation of High School Students (FEEM).
