An official, signed letter from the National President of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) requesting the release the Five Heroes was sending to US President Barack Obama on April 12.

CUPE is the largest Union in Canada with more than 605.000 members, and its endorsement of this important cause is a positive step in obtaining support amongst the Canadian public.

"We are appealing to you for the release of the men known as the "Cuban Five", said the letter and explains that in March 2010, the Cuban government requested the United Nations' Human Rights Council to reactivate the case of the Cuban Five, whose detentions have been termed arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. Cuba also noted that the wives of two of them are still prevented from visiting their husbands.

"After so many years, it is time for action. It is time to release these men and ensure their safe passage home to their families in Cuba."
