The Italian Committee for Justice for the Cuban Five, imprisoned in the U.S., today promoted a public debate on the truth of a case which is intentionally silenced by the European media.
The Five, as they are known worldwide for Gerardo Hernandez, René González, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and Ramón Labañino, have been around almost 12 years imprisoned in U.S. jails for defending their country against criminal activities of terrorist organizations in the United States.
By moving a greeting of solidarity from numerous Italian associations, committee vice-president Luciano Vasapollo meant the importance of the international campaign for the release of the Five in the current context of a global struggle for freedom and self-determination of peoples. Vasapollo appreciated the great spirit of unity expressed by the new leadership of the Italian Committee and the efforts to fight for the cause of the Cuban antiterrorist unjustly imprisoned. The first initiative of the group was precisely the organization of this national debate entitled: The truths of Cuba on a case that the media are deliberately ignoring; the meeting was attended by Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, wives of Gerardo and Rene respectively.
Haidi Gaggio Giuliani, the current president of the committee, said she was honored to chair the organization and to contribute to this global struggle for the liberation of the Five.
In the presence of members of supportive associations in the Peace House, located in the neighborhood of Testaccio, the wives of the two five antiterrorists denounced the continuing serious injustices that these men have faced in nearly 12 years in prison.
Perez and Salanueva, along with Cuban journalist Arleen Rodriguez highlighted the battle while they develop organizations and friends around the world for their release and to disseminate the truth of case.
They called for solidarity groups and the Italian Committee Justice for the Five to intensify the struggle with political and cultural initiatives to counter the lies and break the wall of silence that the United States, with the complicity of the media in capitalist countries, raised in this case, they said.
The debate was also attended by the Cuban and Venezuelan ambassador in Italy, Rodney Lopez and Luis Jose Berroteran as well as the representatives of political and left-wing parties and some journalists.
