Useful Cooking: A book dedicated to the Five Cubans
Frank Rodriguez, a chef from Gran Club Santa Lucia hotel, located in the tourist resort of Santa Lucia beach, in the central province of Camaguey, successfully wrote a book titled "Cooking useful”. People could think that Rodriguez, also member of the Culinary Association in this province, only wrote a cooking manual, but his offer goes beyond the issue.
Rodriguez’ book shows the great passion of the author for cooking native of Camagüey province, as well as some of his researches done, from ancient times, until culinary preferences of some historical personalities in the region, even those favorite dishes of the five Cuban anti-terrorists imprisoned in U.S. jails.
"I wondered, how could I relate cooking theme with the Cuban Five”, said Frank. "It was something I could manage myself to; so I decided to focus on “The Five” whom Cubans love so much. “But the Five’s case is a political and legal issue. What were your motivations to relate politics to your profession?
"Sitting at the table to have the every day breakfast around your family is a beautiful thing. But it is sad to sit at the table without one of the most beloved relatives you have, due to the injustice of a foreign government. This is the reason for which I wrote about The Five on my cooking book."
What are the culinary preferences of the five Cubans?
"Tony is a vegetarian person; but he has changed his eating habits in prison, otherwise he could damage his health. He also likes mixed rice.”
"Fernando loves cold salad and yucca with mojo. Gerardo prefers fried rice, roast chicken, pork chop with ham and cheese, and other Creole dishes.”
"Ramón enjoys eating pork scratching, lamb, plantains, white rice with brown beans and roast pork. René likes soups and seafood, mainly shrimp. “
Have you ever personally talked to any of them?
"All the information that appeared in my book was providing by The Five’s relatives.”
"While the Forum of Science and Technology was being hold by the Ministry of Tourism, an event where Cubanacan Company awarded my book, René González called his wife, who was attending the conference. Gonzalez sent greetings for me and for all participants; he also said that he was very grateful to me for the book I wrote. “
Do you know if any of them likes to cook?
"Fernando likes to cook yucca with mojo. It is painful for him; he can not eat such a simple dish with his family. It is seems that this situation has turned into an emotional blackmail, as President of the Cuban Parliament Ricardo Alarcon said.“
“Any way, I am pretty sure that someday the five Cubans will return to take their seats at the family table."
