Army General Raul Castro

The plenary session of the VII Legislature of the National Assembly of the People’s Power with presence of the Army General Raul Castro takes place today in the Havana Convention Center. At the beginning of the session president of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo Alarcón reported to more than 600 deputies about the deplorable situation of Gerardo Hernanadez Nordelo, one of the Five Cuban heroes unjustly imprisoned in the United States.

Alarcón reported that in the last hours Leinard Weinglass, Gerardo’s attorney visited him in prison, accompanied by the representative of the human and constitutional rights in the U.S state of California. Weinglass said he will not allowed to a direct contact with him neither his documents after many discussions he was allowed to have a notebook without previous information.

Gerardo could relate to Weinglass the chronology of the most important events related with his case. On July 21 at 9:00 am, he was called to a meeting with prison lieutenant, later he was of everything he had twice and he was put into a punishment cell in handcuffs for two hours stripped of everything he had. He had no idea of what was happening.

At 2:00 in the afternoon, he was informed that some people wanted to interviewed, he was hold to an office where two men in civilian clothes were waiting for him and showed them their documents of members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Then, he talked about 5 minutes and carried out to hole where he is still now.

Alarcón explained that according to information given by Weinglass, Gerardo was very frank to recognize the bad con in the last 12 years. He explained that there is a technical problem with the air conditioner and the prisoners are obliged to cover with the bedspreads because the temperature was very high.

On Friday the temperature reached 40 grades and the prisoners sleep over the floor to feel the air.

It is known that in this area the prisoners constantly shout all night long, because the lack of air, but nobody answers. Some of them suffer from asthma and hit the steel door for calling the attention of the guards. They stated in this area 22 and 23 hours every day. On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday they can go to the yard and see the sky and breathe, because there are no windows.

Alarcón continue reporting to the deputies the opportunities where he is brutally confined, the water is very hot and it’s a problem for the prisoners. It is a terrible situation.

Weinglass said that Gerardo looks good, his state of mind is high, and his mind is clear and easily smiles. He is conscious of his situation, what is happening and he also considers this situation will not continue.

The National Assembly adopted a declaration to condemn the bad conditions against Gerardo’s life and hold United States government responsible for current situation and the personal safety of our comrade. We call to raise all the voices to save Gerardo, an admirable hero, an innocent man who deserves his freedom.
