The Parliament President recalled that the process so-called resentence was not on Gerardo’s side, so he is the only one of the “Five” who still remains at a high-security prison

Defense attorney of Gerardo Leonard Weinglass traveled to California on Friday to know by himself the current situation of his client, which is a step forward of those actions that are being taken by Cuban government along with Defense Department for the five Cuban antiterrorists, after having heard of Gerardo’s confinement in a hole at Victorville prison despite his health problems, where is not allowed to any communication, submitted to harsh regime.

President of National Assembly Ricardo Alarcon released this information on Friday just before the beginning of the meeting of the fifth session of the seven legislature of parliament, where members of the General Customs of the Republic of Cuba gave later current information about their actions undertaken.

The travel of Leornad Weinglass, one of the main attorneys of Gerardo, is aimed at claiming his right to visit the inmate as well as discuss about his health, and try to talk about the habeas corpus underway.

According to Alarcon’s opinion, it is a moral obligation to address all the parliament members, not only those of the International Relationships Commission, for them to be informed about the current state of one of the Cuban five antiterrorists – Gerardo - related to the violations and unjust facts being carried out by the US government in the case of the “The Five”, above all Gerardo’s case who is serving the biggest sentence: two life imprisonments plus 15 years in prison.

The Parliament President recalled that the process so-called resentence was not on Gerardo’s side, so he is the only one of the “Five” who still remains at a high-security prison. As it if were not enough, Gerardo has been held 12 years and her wife, Adriana has been refused the visa to travel to the United States all the time. It seems, she has no right to visit her husband and see him again.

Alarcon also said that Gerardo and his attorneys are absorbed in the habeas corpus process, a right all inmates have and the last resort for him. The Parliament President noted that the prisoner is involved in this process, as he was refused to revise his sentence last year, and for that reason hw was confined to the hole again.

It is coincidence that every step of this long process, in which Gerardo has had to meet his attorneys to present new documents; he has been sent back to the hole, in prison, as it happening now, Alarcon stressed.

Gerardo, he added, is supposed to be working with his attorneys, in preparing the habeas corpus reading documents, giving his opinions; but he is deprived of any communication, isolated from the world outside.

Aside from this legal process, Alarcon expressed his concerned for Gerardo’s health, who added that the inmate had being complaining since last April, but the he was only allowed to see a doctor lat July 20. He also said that it seems, Gerardo is having problems connected to a bacterium that is circulating among the penal population, and also suffers from unbalanced blood pressure. The need for additional exams was determined.

But the next day Gerardo was not sent to the hospital, instead he was sent back to the hole, Alarcon said and added: he was deprived of any communication. Gerardo’s situation is turning very serious, not only because of the habeas corpus legal process, but also because his health is at risk.

“Thus far, we have put our claims to the State Department, but we have received no reply. Gerardo’s sister visited him last July 24 and stated that her brother is being punished in the hole, handcuffed,” the Parliament President told.

Alarcon urged the deputies of parliament to think of possible contributions in favor of the release of the Cuban five antiterrorists, as well as to promote and denounce   Gerardo’s plight by means of letters, emails, faxes, and talks.

He noted that information about the case of Five” is widely being distorted and for that reason Cuba people should work hard in favor of them, mainly for the physical integration and health of Gerardo.

The Parliament President finally held the U.S. Government responsible for the health and physical integrity of Gerardo Hernandez.
