September 12, 2010, will mark the 12th anniversary of the unfair arrest of the Cuban Five and the indictment brought against them by the U.S. government. Despite the cruel and inhuman conditions these prisoners are still subjected to -Gerardo, Ramón, Antonio, Fernando and René-, they remain firm and optimistic about the prospects of their release.
The freeing of The Five will depend, first and foremost, on the campaigns to mobilize the Cuban people, as well as on the actions of those who have declared their solidarity with them in all corners of the United States and the world.
The National Committee to Free the Cuban Five is calling all cities and organizations to plan actions – which can be demonstrations, the distribution of leaflets, press conferences with local speakers, forums, and visits to the activists’ governmental representatives to ask them for their support. Each of these actions will reach more people and will provide more information about the cause of the five Cubans and the struggle for their freedom. If all committees mobilize, we’ll be able to reach tens of thousands of people, one by one, which will make this movement grow significantly.
Many important actions have already been planned for September and October, from Washington DC to San Francisco and from New York City to Los Angeles, as well as in Canada, Italy, Argentina, England and Peru.
In Washington DC, on Monday, September 13, the A.N.S.W.E.R Coalition and the National Committee to Free the Cuban Five will picket in front of the Broadcasting Board of Governors - BBG - to demand from this organization the spreading of documents that will provide new evidence about the collaboration of the U.S. government with journalists in Miami, who received secret payments from Radio and TV Marti while covering the trial in a biased and partial way.
On September 3, in New York City, an exhibition of Antonio Guerrero’s works of art will be opened. The cities of Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Long Beach, Seattle, Chicago, Albuquerque, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Boston, Philadelphia, Austin and Seattle will host several events from September 10th through the 14th.
