Spanish painter Pablo Bernal presented a 2011 calendar showing some of his works, aimed at collecting funds for the cause of the five Cuban antiterrorists imprisoned in the United States.
The project, called “Calendar for the Freedom of The Five: 2011 -They will Return,” had the support of the Camilo Cienfuegos Association of Friendship with Cuba in Valencia, and was presented during a ceremony in solidarity with Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and Ramón Labañino, the www.cubahora.com Web site reported.
The five Cuban fighters are serving unjust sentences in U.S. prisons since 1998 for monitoring the activities of Florida-based anti-Cuban extremist groups.
Bernal, who was born in 1963 and whose disability -Down’s syndrome- has not prevented him from creating real works of art, is closely linked to the struggle for the liberation of the five Cuban Heroes. He recently carried out two exhibitions in Cuba and also donated the profits made from sales to the cause of the five unfairly incarcerated anti-terrorists.
"In all these years of this hard battle, Paco has taught us that constant struggle, without losing tenderness and joy, is one of the main tools to overcome such injustice" the www.thecuban5.org Web site reported.
In reference to the calendar, the site highlights that this new effort by Paco, made in very difficult moments for his poor health, stands out for its beauty.
"Topics like the demand for the freedom of our five brothers, the defense of the Cuban Revolution and the meaning of friendship or love, emerge as postcards throughout the four seasons of the year" adds the report.
In a letter, Cuban authorities thanked the artist from Alicante for his gesture of solidarity, by way of a message received by the project’s sponsors.
