On December 1st, Cuba celebrates the Day of Radio Hosts and Announcers. This is a great occasion to acknowledge the work these professionals carry out everyday to provide people with all kind of information, leisure and culture.
Radio hosts and announcers have turned into hostesses of their listeners over twenty-four hours of broadcasting. They enter our houses every day as if they were part of the family or a work colleague.
Many hosts and announcers began their career in the radio before jumping to the television. And after all this time, it is fair to say that it takes an announcer to make radio what it is today.
Truth is that radio announcing has been steadily and increasingly developing in Cuba since the second half of the twentieth century. Now it can be affirmed that they have become indispensable in this media. These professionals, who know in depth the issues they broadcast about, plus their natural gift, are able to reach the audience with messages. They engage the audience with their experiences and shared their ideas, or foster debate and controversy in favor of a better society.
Many great radio announcers have entered the history of Cuban radio. For that reason, we are satisfied today of those people who have devoted and continue to devote to their profession with elegance and commitment.
The new generations of radio announcers honor their predecessors by taking them as a source of inspiration while honing their skills in front of a microphone.
A radio host or announcer is a personality of culture, they are public figures. It can be seen in the display of affection people give them when they visit workplaces or on the streets. This recognition is not earned overnight, by a diploma or inherited. It is a merit earned through the full dedication to work.
For Cuban radio announcers, their profession implies permanent professional growth. They read and interchange with professionals of different social spheres. So, they are able to hold a talk with anybody, have a rich vocabulary and an unlimited eloquence.
On this day of Cuban radio announcers and hosts, we remembered all those who came before the current generation. And current radio hosts and announcers should be praised for their work. It must be stressed that radio announcing, like any other activity held in the media, is a way of providing benefits to society rather than a living.
