At the opening of the ceremony of this crucial national celebration, a poem by Cuban writer Miguel Barnet on the heroic deed storming the Moncada Garrison – was read by an outstanding actor from Ciego de Avila province, which was granted the venue of the celebration. The poem sums up the reasons why those who followed leader of revolution Fidel Castro in that heroic deed do not forget those fighters who sacrificed their valuable lives to support them in combat, as well as those who have been able to hold high the revolution principles since it triumphed on January 1st, 1959 from the July 26, the same ideas defended on July 26, 1953.

The Cuban people and specially locals of Ciego de Avila province, who are absorbed in the achievement of the Guidelines passed at the Sixth Cuban Party Congress as well as the preparation of the National Conference next January 28th, honored those heroes and martyrs who played the main role in the epic deed of July 26, 1953.

Along with President Raul at the presidency with members of the Politburo and the Secretariat and the Council of State and Ministers, were Pedro Alfonso Domingo Bandunes, a member of the Secretariat of the Movement for the Liberation of Angola and a delegation of that brother country, Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, First Secretary of the Party in Ciego de Avila province, leaders of the provincial government, the State, political and mass organizations, the Revolutionary Armed Forces and the Ministry of Interior.

Also attending the ceremony for those who stormed the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes Garrisons, were relatives of the Cuban Five Heroes, prisoners of the Empire, the Committee of relatives of the victims of terrorism, Solidarity Brigades with Cuba and a representation of the twenty-second Caravan of Pastors for Peace .

Parallel to the celebration, the Cuban award-winning painter Nelson Dominguez and a group of artists painted a mural dedicated to the Fatherland, which reveals elements of the national identity and links of this heroic deed with our National Hero José Martí.
