Fidel send the message to the revolutionary combatants from Artemisa and throughout Cuba

Wearing his green shirt, witness of his many battles, Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro Ruz paid homage July 24 to the martyrs of the July 26 attack, as he visited the Museleum raised to honor them in the municipality of Artemisa.

Accompanied by Revolution Commanders Ramiro Valdes and Guillermo Garcia, July 26 veterans Ramon Pez Ferro and Gelasio Fernandez and other guests, Fidel Castro recalled many details of the heroic action carried out in 1953 and he particularly stressed the significant contribution by the combatants from Artemisa.

He extolled the brave spirit of the young men and noted “if something encouraged me was to see how revolutionary the young men from Artemisa really were. They actually were among those with the most combative spirit in Cuba.”

In recalling the action Fidel said he did not have the slightest doubt about the success of the attack. He said he would do it again exactly the same way.

Fidel paid tribute to the combatants in front of the niches that treasure their mortal remains and he laid flowers at the place. Then he greeted the people that gathered near the place to see him and talk with him.

During his visit at the place where he paid honor to his colleagues of so many revolutionary battles, Fidel read the following message:

Message to the revolutionary combatants from Artemisa and throughout Cuba

Dear comrades:

Next Monday, July 26, we will mark 57 years of restless struggle for the independence of our homeland.

Few of us have had the privilege of living. In my personal case, I thank the combatants from Artemisa, who got in and rescued me just when I was near the entrance, as I tried to prevent a machinegun from shooting at the combatants whom I had ordered to withdraw.

Our revolutionary thinking stemmed from Marti´s idea that “Homeland is Humanity!”, and our thinking has not stopped developing.

The mere fact of having maintained this struggle for such a long time is a proof of what a small nation can achieve in the face of the gigantic power of the empire.

In a year like this one, when we get closer, every single day, to dramatic developments, I feel myself obliged to recall the brave comrades incarcerated in high security prisons in the United Sates.

It is grotesque the hatred felt against them by those who lead that empire, incapable of understanding that by doing so they take them to such honorable place.

They, like our diplomatic representatives in that country and in many other places posing similar danger, keep firm in the places assigned by their duties, imperturbable in the face of big risks of which they are very aware.

The stories making news every day continue to confirm our appraisals of the serious dangers pending on humanity.

Nothing, however, can snatch the right to enjoy each day of glory and happiness, which July 26 represents for our people.

Nobody can either deprive us of the right to dream that our species can still survive the hard tests waiting for us in the near future.

I congratulate with happiness and the dignity inherited from our ancestors through nearly two centuries of struggle!

Fidel Castro Ruz
