A total of 18 works were selected to take part in the final stage of the 4th National Chronicle Contest, as part of the 5th meeting of cultivators of that genre, announced every year by the local office of the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC), located in Cienfuegos province, on the south-center side of the island.
The Jury analyzed 95 works from 36 media outlets of nine Cuban provinces, in the following categories: press (23), radio (33), television (9), digital journalism (15) as well as works by journalism students from three universities (15).
After the first day of work, the Jury selected, in radio : “Abuela” by Danae Aguila, “Sostenido por la fe” by Liante Santana Milán; and “Naturaleza” by Danae Aguila, all of them from the Radio del Ciudad del Mar station, as well as “Nelida Portieles, carpintera and artist” by Arelys Harcia from the Radio Santi Spiritus station.
In the category for journalism students, the chronicles that reached the final stage were: “Alita de cucaracha” by Maydolis Gomez; “El Cobre, de la caridad” by Carla Gloria Colome; Todos los caminos conducen al Vedado, by Carlos Manuel Alvarez; and “Memorias de Cuba socialista, by Jesus Adonis Martinez, all of them from the University of Havana.
In the press category, the works selected were the following: “Las huellas de Pedro Moreno en el Malecon Habanero,” by Adolfo Silva, a correspondent with the Cuban News Agency (AIN) in Camaguey; “Esos cordeles de nuestra transparencia,” by Alina Perera, from Juventud Rebelde newspaper; “Tristan, fabricante de estrellas,” by Yansulier Garcia, from Cienfuegos province, and Esteban de Jesus Arencibia, whose article was published in the Alma Mater magazine.
For digital journalism, the finalists were: “La Coubre, postales desde el abismo”, by Antonio Enrique, from Cienfuegos province; “Nadia, la que escribe con la voz” and “Almeida es un canto”, the two of them by Reinaldo Cedeño, from the Radio Siboney station in Santiago de Cuba province; and “La fama de los famosos,” by Ramon Barreras, a correspondent with the Trabajadores newspaper in Cienfuegos province.
In television, the works: “Graffitis a orillas del mar,” by Ismary Barcia, from the Perlavisión local channel; and “La letra de la cordura,” by Maydolis Garcés, from the Golfovisión local channel in Granma province.
The Jury was composed of Luis Sexto -winner of the 2009 Jose Martí National Journalism Prize- as its president; Demetrio Villaurrutia, journalist and radio producer of the Radio Rebelde station; Alina Rosel, director of the 5 de Septiembre newspaper in Cienfuegos province; and Omar George Capri, a television producer with the Perlavisión local channel in Cienfuegos province.
During the Contest, another Jury, appointed with that purpose, will select the winners of the first, second, and third places in each category. Finalists will be invited to the meeting, scheduled for November 11th through the 13th.
