This January 12th Haiti has nothing to celebrate, today is the first anniversary of the devastating earthquake measuring 7.3 degrees on the Richter scale that hit the impoverished Caribbean nation in January 2010, and more than facts, Haiti has been reflected the enormous hypocrisy that prevails in this world of ours, and the huge gap between rich and poor.
It is time to seek real and lasting solutions to that sister nation, said Cuban leader Fidel Castro in one of his reflections on the situation in Haiti following the earthquake. And certainly very little nations have supported to what precisely a people victim of colonialism, which for centuries has been plundered their wealth and material and human resources.
Why this day does not analyze the reasons that make Haiti the poorest country in the world? Why do not we ask whether the aid that needs the little island is the intervention in their internal affairs or the miserable injection of resources that are then taken to a first world? Why not ask about the value of the sad smile of children in the streets of Port au Prince?
Cuba by proximity and history leads to Haiti and its people at heart, many temporary farm workers found a relief to their pains of exploited workers, in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, when coffee and cocoa colonizers settlers migrated and settled on the island with their slaves and Haitian workers. Many Haitians avoided poverty and found a new life in the Eastern parts of Cuba and left us culture, religion, traditions, identity, dance and music heritage are still in a good part of the eastern part of our country.
The most moving images of a people are from Haiti, the mainstream media presents it as a nation ungovernable because of poverty and hunger, in a population that depends almost 50% of remittances from relatives living in abroad, and suffers the lack of infrastructure for its reconstruction after the earthquake in this strategic nation in our hemisphere.
Much propaganda campaign to "Help Haiti" we have seen and read by Internet, both in social networks such as that coming from artists and organizations, whose actions are shown isolated and uncoordinated. Virtual surface cures to a bleeding wound for years and which has roots deep in the soul of a people that suffers and cries of exploitation and plundering.
Very few nations have responded with indifference to the brave Haitian people. The states grouped in the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA), led by Venezuela, have cancelled Haiti's debt, the fact that has been not been reported enough by the "mainstream media", despite being unprecedented.
Nor do they speak of the huge show of solidarity of the Cuban doctors who have fought shoulder to shoulder on the devastated island to save hundreds of lives, first in the aftermath of the earthquake and after the appearance of "suspicious" of a cholera epidemic that has claimed more than 4 000 lives.
Haiti today has no health infrastructure to deal with an epidemic, and the Cuban Medical Mission and the International Brigade "Henry Reeve" has shown what can the solidarity if it proposes to rise from the ashes a people steeped in pain, desolation and sorrow.
And while Cuba offered their helping hands and resources to promote health and life to revive the United States occupies strategic military positions near Haitian, announcing the visit of the "wolf" U.S. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, the highest symbol of imperial interference and the greatest advocate of confessed terrorist Luis Posada Carriles, now on trial for lying in El Paso, Texas and backed by the U.S. government to avoid being condemned as the greatest criminal in Latin America and the Caribbean.
What Haiti expects from the world? The answer for this question is no in the UN and its mission in that country( MINUSTAH), the World Health Organization or Doctors without Borders, have no answer the united artists grouped in the campaigns in favor of a people that suffers, or in the Organization of American States.
The answer lies with the hundreds of thousands of survivors of this world full of Climate Change, in this universe of Global Crisis betting on a different world where the full solidarity, security and peace are principles of life. Only in this way a people as Haiti can be saved and then that "mainstream media" will be required to show a different picture.
Haiti calls for a world full of hope, for a different and possible universe.
