Cuba is a country that for long has boasted to have various figures excelling in several scientific fields: Felipe Poey, Alvaro Reynoso, Tranquilino Sandalio Noda, Carlos J. Finlay, Joaquin Albarran, Tomás Romay, Pedro Kouri, among others, who have been irrefutable examples of Cuban relevant personalities in the context of science, who have made significant contributions to general knowledge, all of them a source of pride for our country.

At the beginning of our Revolution, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz said that in the future Cuba would be a country of men of science, an evidence of the importance given to science as a driving force for development, since the very beginning of the revolutionary process.

What was then an aspiration is now a reality. Cuba is a country of men of science since science in Cuba has reached out a remarkable development, which in many respects ranks itself at the level of the most developed nations worldwide.

The huge development of science after the triumph of the Revolution is noticed in the most diverse branches of economy and human knowledge. An example of this lies in the many existing scientific research centers across the country; the existence of scientific poles in all provinces and the procurement of medicines, teaching methods, technologies and other contributions, an achievement of our scientists´ talent and dedication.

Our biotechnological development, the literacy campaign teaching method “Yes I Can” and the hepatitis B vaccine are examples of the already attained Cuban scientific level:  An unthinkable goal five decades ago.

Thus science is a part of Cuban reality today, with a massive presence in social life turning it into a significant phenomenon - something weird in Third World countries -  and a fact of growing importance and impact upon our national context.

The Cuban Radio, portraying through its coverage the dynamics of national life,  has pinpointed permanently scientific issues on its grill and this has been explicitly described at the Program Policy of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT), so that its national, provincial and municipal radio stations should slot science as part of its programming involving multiple interests.

In the countryside programming on issues such as animal welfare, plant protection and the implementation of clean technologies that facilitate environmental care and preservation, and on news programs where the pieces of news or the general information about these scientific achievements in the country , provinces and municipalities,  the outcomes at different levels in science and technology fora are present with a remarkable frequency – having a wide coverage - on especialized shows and spots, in drama and  historical shows, on which the life and work of scientific personalities are presented to our audience, especially in programs for children, adolescents and youth, where these listeners are encouraged to interest themselves in science.

A significant feature of relevance related to science and its inclusion in Cuban radio programming lies in the on-air presence of specialists and experts, many of whom are scientists, men and women, a very common fact on the Cuban radio and that is mutually beneficial.

Science can reach broad sectors of the population due to the  popularity of radio.  In this case, the systematic coverage of scientific issues helps raise the quality and attractiveness of programming from the viewpoint of strengthening its contents and/or diversifying its subjets.

In the specific case of experts on science,  their voices attract the knowledge on various edges of science, which leads to raise the prestige of our radio stations and their credibility with respect of their audiences.

Our Cuban Radio has managed to successfully address this goal from the fact of conveying these undeniable artistic contents of interest to those who tuned them in,  and this has been highlighted in  programs of this kind, awarded in national and international contests.

On January 15th,  our men and women of science will enjoy a well deserved tribute, and in the case of  radio, such tribute will not be restricted to this remarkable day, but will honour Cuban Radio due to its devotion on the permanent scientific coverage and its  programming comprehensiveness being aired through its frequencies which are a permanent tribute to Cuban science.
