Cuba has been inserted on the Iberoamerican pharmacogenetics network and has been carrying out preclinical and clinical studies for three years to contribute to improve drug efficacy on patients, said Dr. Idania Rodeiro, specialist at the Marine Byproducts Center of the Environment Agency. Dr. Idania announced that this new product will allow an individualized therapy corresponding to the drugs treatments with a better therapeutic efficacy and a reduction of negative effects.
All come out from approaches, in which genetic and genetic polymorphism can contribute to improve those dosages already established inmedical practice.
Rodeiro explained that it includes all medications of the basic health storage in Cuba, as well as alternative therapies such as natural and traditional medicine.
So far, the results have been tested through different natural extracts consumed by Cubans such as Vimang and different polyphenols, which are extracted from that watery mango tree and then purified by pharmacologists.
The expert noticed that the potential of drugs interactions of those products commonly used in the treatment for specific ailments are being studied.
Some of them include anti-inflammatory, analgesics, antibiotics and cytostatics which are often consumed aside from conventional therapies, natural extracts that can improve patients’ quality of life and extend survival in case of cancer.
Marine Biological Products Center is a specialized institution that establishes the scientific basis to ensure and contribute to the sustainable use of resources and coastal ecosystems on the Cuban shelf and adjacent seas, through research, assessment, and monitoring of biological diversity, and environmental and health quality, as well as development of biotechnology and sea culture.
