Jose Marti's very-little known portrait in Washington as Uruguay's diplomat

Retrato poco conocido de José Martí en Washington como representante diplomático de Uruguay

At an early stage, Marti realized that no country in Latin America could trust on its neighboring country, the United States, and that Latin American countries should keep a distance, as far as possible, to save their freedom; so he stated: “It was not enough for us to get free from the Spanish rule if our fate was in search of the “deities” from North America.

The imperialists have clearly proved to believe “that the whole world is their village,” ever since they remain as the mayor, or notify its rival about its absolute possession of everything, or the increase of its bank savings or the universal power is okayed for them (1).

With that reasoning, the Empire has imposed a strict blockade upon Cuba, despite the UN members countries have voted against it for nineteen consecutive times at the UN General Assembly, just for the fact that the island has not become a submissive neighbor and subjugated to their plans after the triumph of the Cuban revolution in 1959.

When Fidel Castro stated that Jose Marti was Moncada Garrison’s attack mastermind, the U.S. could think it was just a phrase expressed by a young dreamer, but not consistent with his anti-imperialist thoughts nourished by Marti’s revolutionary and struggling philosophy.

The Revolution’s path has been threatened ever before its triumph, from Dwight D. Eisenhower, who collaborated with Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship to avoid the imminent victory of the Rebel Army to Barack Obama, who seems to be following his predecessors ‘steps and has not solved what he promised during his politic campaign. All of them have collaborated with, supported and protected with the right wingers, in their campaign against our country, where some of this Cuban Americans have swollen files just enough to be in prison for the rest of their lives.

All American governments have promoted a consumer society along their moves and political, economic and media actions, as a paradigm for happiness and well-being.
For this purpose, they have all resources to try to destroy, distort, and eliminate a beacon shining even more today, not only in Our America –as  our national hero used to call it- , but also in other spots around the world, where our professional service is required.

Heirs of Marti’s revolutionary philosophy, Cubans are consistent with his legacy and reassert theses words from our Master:  “Cubans only ask the world for knowledge and respect for their sacrifice:  Their blood will reach the universe."

For the unwary people of this world, their desired way of life equals to banality, easiness and superficiality as the main goal to reach. Marti warned: “the poisonous luxury -enemy of freedom- spoils the ordinary man and opens the gates to a foreigner. Others refine, with the spirited epic of the endangered independence, the virile character.

Marti never abandoned the social and political speech, nor the conceptual and philosophical ones, related to notions on the reality he envisioned, from which he used to find conclusions at anytime and make recommendations for the Latin Americans.

Our National Hero never doubted that all positive things in favor of our Latin American peoples should be imitated in order to develop science and make some progress. But he also alerted them to what they should not do, what they could not imitate from the US model.

Marti made a contribution regarding his visionary perspective on the dangers swinging over our Latin American peoples and Cuba due to the excessive US interest of intervening on their internal affairs and getting hold of each country’s richness.

Hence the fairness of Marti’s words related to the facts and developments taking place over fifty years under the most cruel aggressiveness that has been imposed upon by an aggressive country against another, a powerful country against a small one, without enough natural resources:  But despite its extension,  it has always shown its strength, gallantry, wisdom, and resistance. That is something not conceived by the logic of the empire.
