“Our human species is in real danger of extinction, we can and must try hard for it not to happen, “said the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, during a meeting with intellectuals and prominent figures in Culture within the framework of the 20th International Book Fair 2011.
Fidel labeled the unleashing of war with the potentials the scientists have put in the hands of men, among the factors threatening the world today. “Our human species is facing new challenges and we have not learned to survive with them; so you, the intellectuals, must understand the risk we are running and help humanity,” noted Fidel during the meeting.
Fidel made some reflections in his speech during the Summit for the Environment in Rio de Janeiro, in which he warned that a human species was in danger of extinction: man. He also recalled that he had been carefully listened to and with kindness, and noted that those powerful men who attended the meeting realized he was right, but they would solve that problem only some centuries later.
“It is time to pay attention to environmentalists and scientists, those eminent thinkers who see that the capitalist system is going towards an inevitable disaster, and Fidel noted later: We are one step closer to the abyss and we can not cause any damage to humanity, when we are almost 7 billions people worldwide.
Peace was one of the subjects tackled by Fidel during his meeting with intellectuals. The leader of the Cuban Revolution called the participants to play an active role in the world current problems.
Fidel referred to destructive power of nuclear weapons since that historic moment, when bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. He asserted that all scientists and experts have worked out: the effects of all nuclear bomb, modern resources, computers, the effects of all volcanoes that have erupted, small and large fires, earthquakes. He added for the completion of this idea: You are writing, working and increasing knowledge; I think you can do something about it, said the Commander in Chief.
He also referred to another serious problem affecting the human species: the high price of food which can lead to unpredictable results especially for underdeveloped countries. Fidel said that there is no doubt that food prices have increased at a fast pace, and it has triggered off anger on part of the people as in India, and Egypt.
Climate change and the problem of food are burning aspects affecting the maintenance of humanity; pointed out Fidel during an hour of exchanges with intellectuals and personalities attending the 20th International Book Fair, Cuba 2011.
