The International Neurological Restoration Center (CIREN), belonging to the Cuban scientific area since its opening 22 years ago, has treated more than 45,000 patients from 88 from countries, including Cubans.
This treatment and research institution is a hospital of reference of the Neurological Restoration Program as well as some ailments such as the Cerebral Palsy in children, Parkinson’s disease and the Refractory Epilepsy (resistant to medication treatment).
CIREN’s executive director, Dr. Emilio Villa explained that the development of the Good Practice Guidelines provides a guarantee of the quality of the medical assistance in the treatment of Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy and Parkinson’s disease This has contributed to offering high quality and excellent services, for that reason the institution holds the International Bureau Veritas Certification, (BVC) and the National Office of Normalization with the NC-ISO-9000-2008.
The relevant results have demonstrated the efficiency of the short and long- term Subthalamic Nucleus Surgery in patients with Parkinson’s disease and the motor training of these patients has been improved through the March Laboratory and virtual reality is applied in a research form in the same treatments, in order to better the coordination in the manipulation skills.
Villa highlights the technology transference of the Parkinson’s surgery to the Lucia Iñiguez Surgical-Clinical and Teaching Hospital in Holguin, where over 20 patients have been operated on in the preceding year.
CIREN also carries out under the principles of the integral and intensive surgery led by a multidisciplinary staff, the diagnosis and monitoring of autism disorders, which is in its research phase, consequently the new biological markers and the integral evaluation through the international rankings are proposed.
Likewise, the institution shows relevant experiences in the research of the new treatment with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation on neurological conditions such as the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in children and Trigeminal Neuralgia in adults.
On the occasion of the CIREN anniversary, the Medical University of Havana granted the category of Guest professor of the institution to outstanding Spanish professor, researcher and neurologist, Dr. Jose Angel Obeso, promoter of the institution’s relations with the international neurosciences.
