The Museum of the Revolution, Presidential Palace before the revolutionary triumph in 1959 was the place where the journalists received the medal that distinguishes them for a relevant career dedicated to journalism and its teaching.
Journalists of different generations were awarded in a formal ceremony, an act full of symbolism to share such an important recognition with relevant Cuban and foreign personalities, deeply linked with the struggle of the Cuban press to make known the real situation of a sovereign nation.
This distinction was also granted to close and faithful collaborators such as attorney Jose Pertierra, who with his chronicles from El Paso, Texas, continues revealing to the world the manipulated farce in favor terrorist Luis Posada Carriles.
Outstanding Argentinean economist and political scientist, Atilio Boron; director of Mexican newspaper La Jornada, Carmen Lira and U.S documentary maker and writer Saul Landau were also deserving of the highest distinction granted by the Cuban press.
Outstanding blogger Enrique Ubieta and singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez, representing Cuban intelligentsia, were also awarded.
Carlos Serpa and Moises Rodriguez, for their unconditional dedication to the defense of the nation deserved the Felix Elmuza Distinction, two exemplary men that penetrated into the enemy splinter groups facing all kind of risks. Emilio and Vladimir for the Organs of the Security State have deserved the respect and admiration of the people. They were also granted the distinction by UPEC, the genuine group of the Cuban press professionals.
Representing Radio Rebelde, comrades Juana de la Caridad Dueñas (Cuqui Dueñas) and Virginia Maria Martinez were decorated for their fruitful career. Both journalists, with an outstanding reference in the Cuban media, symbolized the devotion and dedication to this not easy profession, where ethics, objectivity and veracity are the principles that have accompanied these prize-winning radio producers, writers and program directors.
In the convulsed times for Cuba, the continent and the world, Cuban press has been consolidated with the same strength and passion that Marti founded the Patria newspaper, on March 14, 1892.
This act was also a tribute to journalist, Felix Elmuza, who was a member of the Granma yatch expedition and was murdered in 1956 in Niquero by the Fulgencio Batista’s dictatorship.
