After intense days in which the Cuban communists discussed and approved the new Guidelines for Economic Policy of the Revolution, the Central Report and different resolutions, the 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba concluded this morning at the Palace of Conventions in Havana, on the 50th anniversary of the strategic and decisive victory of Playa Girón (Bay of Pigs). The great meeting ends an intense period of five months, in which with profound democracy and transparency the guidelines were discussed in different venues around the country, where the main character was always the people, under the leadership of the Party.
This has been a great Congress, said Raul at the closure, which was attended by the historical leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, who does not need to hold a position to always have a top place in history, in the present and future of the Cuban nation and from the fullness of his political thinking, his position as party militant and a soldier of ideas, he will continue in the revolutionary struggle and the noblest of global society.
President Raul Castro indicated that the most dignified and productive way to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the victory of Playa Girón, a day like today, April 19, 1961 was precisely to have held this magnificent Congress, so on behalf of nearly 800 000 militant communists, the thousand delegates, the new leadership of the organization and in particular the Commander in Chief Fidel, he congratulated the Cubans for their active participation in the debates. This undoubted identification and support for the Revolution is a source of satisfaction and also greater responsibility and commitment to achieve, with the assistance of all, the updated economic model and ensure the irreversibility of socialism in Cuba.
In the short term we should focus on enforcing the resolutions of Congress, Raúl emphasized, with a common denominator in the conduct of all: order and discipline, because the modernization of the economic model is not a miracle that can be achieved overnight, but gradually over five years, taking into account a rigorous planning, legal work and everything involved in its implementation.
Also have to make a strong outreach to the population of each of the measures taken and to be vigilant and "with feet planted on the ground" to overcome the obstacles and to rectify the faults committed in its application, Raul Castro reiterated at the closure of the Congress, saying that the main enemy we face and will face are our own shortcomings.
Raúl reiterated in his speech that we can not allow haste or improvisation in the great task before us, so we must not hurry to make changes and, as expressed by Fidel in his Reflections, go with the rhythm of the objective circumstances, always with public support, without jeopardizing the unity of the people about their revolution.
Raul later stated that Cuba is among the handful of countries in the world that have the conditions to transform its economic model and overcome the crisis without social traumas, because we have a patriotic people known for their powerful monolithic force, its higher education and pride in their historical and revolutionary roots.
