The celebration of Workers International Day next May 1st will be just as great as the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party. The date will be an opportunity for the combatant and revolutionary masses of Cuban workers to show their support for the agreements approved in the congress and to ratify their commitment to work hard to fulfil them.

The trade unions are hands on in the preparations for the proletarian celebration that will take place in the José Marti Revolution Square in the capital and in the revolution squares in all the provincial capitals.

Preceded by the final sessions of Cuban communists’ top meeting that put a closure to five months of intense and democratic popular debate, International Workers’ Day will be celebrated in a year when important turning points of the Revolution reach their 50th anniversary: the proclamation of the socialist character of the revolution, the victory in the Bay of Pigs, and the triumphant culmination of the Literacy Campaign.

The activities of the day include celebrations for the centennial of three paradigms of the Cuban trade union movement: Lázaro Peña, Jesús Menéndez and José María Pérez,. The day will be also the perfect setting to recognize prominent workers, mass workers leaders, and outstanding collectives of workers of services, education, and research.

There are plenty of reasons to celebrate that day, said Salvador Valdes Mesa, member of the Communist Party Political Bureau and General Secretary of the Cuban Workers Trade Union (CTC). In six days time, the masses of Cuban workers and their families will flooded the Revolution Square in the capital and all the revolution squares in every province, to march under the logo ‘Unity, productivity and efficiency’.

A tradition, that has grown up on this date, will happen again this year as 1,076 working mass leaders and representatives of trade unions worldwide as well as solidarity groups with Cuba from 48 countries have confirmed their attendance at the activities for the 1st of May.
