altFollowing the opening words of Salvador Valdés Mesa, Secretary General of Cuban Workers Union, representatives of the education sector opened the parade, also commemorating this year the 50 Anniversary of the Literacy Campaign.
The event also paid homage to the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the socialist nature of the Revolution and the defeat of U.S. imperialism at the Bay of Pigs Invasion.
On this occasion, more than 1,600 guests from 63 countries joined the Cuban people in the parade in an expression of international solidarity.
Special guests to this celebration were also Ivan Melnikov, vice president of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, as well as relatives of the Cuban Five, unjustly incarcerated in U.S. prisons for fighting terrorism.
The mobilizations confirmed the popular support of the agreements of the 6th Congress of the Cuban Communist Party and denounced the U.S. blockade against Cuba and the incarceration of the Cuban Five.
Streets and squares around the country were full of Cubans of all ages. Workers, intellectuals, teachers, construction workers, doctors, artists, housewives, engineers, farmers, soldiers, workers, gathered together to celebrate this significant date, dressed in blue, red and white, the colors of our beautiful and unique Cuban flag.
Closing the parade was a block of hundreds of thousands of youngsters to whom is dedicated this May celebrations as well as those held last April 16 for the 50th anniversary of the Bay of Pigs victory, before the Sixth Congress of the PCC.
