Cuban singer songwriter Silvio Rodriguez said the role of the media is vital for the country to succeed in the changes implemented in the island aiming at maintaining its social system, as he received this Thursday a distinction granted by the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) in Havana

Rodriguez was awarded the “Felix Elmuza” Distinction in recognition of his blog “Segunda Cita” (Second Meeting) where he maintains an open dialogue about the current situation in Cuba.

The musician told ACN the media plays an important role in helping the people adapt to the current transformations in tune with the situation of the country.

Rodriguez, 64, supported Cuban President Raul Castro in his claim that the obsolete way in which certain things work in Cuba society and the media must be changed in order to succeed.

Regarding journalists’ job, he said: “It is very hard, bureaucracy is very smart, dig itself in and strives to make itself indispensable, or to seem to be so; everything we do to break down that immobile bureaucracy will turn into benefits for the country.”

In his blog, Rodriguez writes about very sensitive topics that are usually object of distortion by the mainstream media, for example the case of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighter imprisoned in the US.
