The importance of the protection and conservation of the environment at this time for humanity requires that each and all of the inhabitants of the planet is aware that it is the responsibility of all the society, for this cause one day of the year, June 5, it has been designated by the United Nations Organization (ONU) as '' World Environment Day ''.

In Cuba, the protection and conservation of the environment constitutes a high-priority task and an example of that was the creation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment(CITMA), the main organism of this important activity in our country.

It has developed very significant and meritorious work in all that refers to the care and protection of our environment in close links with other organizations and institutions, reflected in a growing interest of the Cuban society toward this aspect that is so vital at this time.

The Cuban Radio is developing, in relation to the environment, a systematic work that is manifested through the integral and integrative presence of this issue in its radio stations.

This presence is expressed through different ways and forms: specialized programs, program sections, journalistic genres, mentions, short messages as well as cuts fixed inside programs, short messages, as well as the thematic content in children’s programs, for adolescents, to young people, for the Cuban family, farmers, dramatized programs and others in order to guarantee that their treatment is carried out starting from different focuses, looking to satisfy very diverse interests in different schedules and frequencies, and with a capacity to impact on dissimilar audiences.

In fact, on June 5 as such, the Cuban Radio reflects this amply, keeping in mind the significance of a date of world celebration, but its central topic, that is to say the Environment, is permanent issue in the programming of our radio stations, also considered a topic of priority and as such it is pointed out in the Programming Policy of the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT), the main document of the norms of the radio and television programming..

Inside the topic of the environment as such there are in the transmitters of the system of the radio multiple Cuban edges of the same issue: Protection of the coasts and bays, the rivers, protected areas, elimination of drains, reforestation, conservation of the sands of the beaches, the care of the swamps, etc, related with coastal areas and marine environments, the Plan Turquino, industrial areas, etc.

This helps to be integrated into the system of radio in Cuba for level or national radio stations, provincial and municipal reach, radio stations whose programming has as  common element the reflection of the interests of the territory in which they are located. What it makes possible is the systematic treatment of situations and very different examples in connection with the environment and its care and since conservation doesn't behave equally, neither do plain, mountainous or coastal ecosystems require the same care and attention.

Also, besides the diversity of the environmental focus given in the reflection of specific situations of different environments, they allow the listener of any region of the country a perspective or systemic vision of the environmental problem starting from the national and international, the provincial and the local situation, starting in tune with the national, provincial or municipal signal.

In the case of the municipal radio station, it acquires an importance of particular transcendence, since when treating situations of the town or the municipality, references are made to facts that people know and they observe in a systematic way that influences on their daily life and that closeness contributes in a bigger measure to sensitize them about the necessity of protecting the environment, carrying out an important contribution to the creation of an environmental culture.

In the programming of the environment on the Cuban radio the presence of a number of notable specialists is prominent in this matter that who participate in different programs. Their participation favors a better quality having, before the microphones, people that possess a wide domain of this topic, which makes a better credibility of the message possible and consequently the capacity to convince about the aspect treated as well as the possibility of increasing the knowledge offered to the listener.

The Cuban Radio has the merit of having propitiated on different occasions the environmental solution of problems and an example of is the program '' Third Planet '' of the provincial station Radio Cadena Agramonte, in the province of Camagüey, a program specialized on the environmental issue. Its role was highlighted in contributing to solving the problem of the contamination of the beds of the Maximo River, a situation that was dealt in several programs.

Another example of the importance of the environment in the Cuban Radio was to have the central topic in the Interactive Forum of the radio stations of the Coast held on November 2010 in the Portal of the Radio.  This was an opportunity in which the development of a fruitful exchange among radio signals located in coastal territories, about experiences, and related achievements toward the protection and care of the coastal and marine environment, which constituted a representative sample of that carried out in this environment by these radios. Four reports presented to this meeting  stood out; by Radio Sandino, La Voz del Litoral, Radio Chaparra and Radio Gibara, and these included valuable information of the work related to this issue develop by these entities. 

On June 5, 2011 the Cuban Radio assumes the commitment of continuing perfecting this programming that takes on an important social function because the care and protection of the environment are vital today for humanity.
