The Oscar Lucero Moya University will celebrate its first graduating class of journalists after the program was initiated five years to fill a void of media professionals in the provinces of Holguin and Granma.
Twenty-nine students in their fifth year of studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences are currently presenting their research in a wide variety of topics, including hypermedia journalism, social networks, blogs, photography, radio and television news programs, and professional skills.
The head of the Journalism Department at the University of Holguin, Beatriz Rodriguez, said that the students’ thesis work is of high scientific rigor and research, and will contribute to improving the daily work of media outlets in Holguin and Granma.
Previously, the students from these regions had to study at the University of Santiago de Cuba, which only granted one or two openings per year for each province. The few graduates were insufficient to fill the void left by outgoing journalists and to meet new jobs in the media.
