Dr. Norma Mederos radio and television especialist
I’ve never heard journalists and friends saying such warm words about critic and essayist Rufo Caballero, as I did during the 33rd Theoretical workshop sponsored by Caracol Awards. The first session of the event was dedicated to the renowned and recently deceased essayist. Named “Tras la huella de Rufo. La Crítica en Cuba” (Following in Rufo’s footsteps. Critics in Cuba), the session was dedicated to remember a man whose life and prolific work were unexpectedly cut short.
Jose Luis Estrada Betancourt, a journalist for Juventud Rebelde newspaper, spoke about Rufo’s extraordinary ability to understand things and his great honesty which were consistently revealed in the several works he published during his lifetime.
On the other hand, researcher and critic Mario Masvidal stated that despite the existence of programs dedicated to debate in the Cuban media, the critic fails sometimes to meet the quality required and reiterated "the need for the Cuban television to be conceived as a media outlet to reflect art, as it happens with cinema, and not only as a social instrument for communication or entertainment.”
During the meeting, participants emphasize on exercising the critic in which the receiver interacts, feedback and also proposes some points of discussion. The main objective of the critics is to raise awareness and reflection in the Cuban society.
Undoubtedly, the meeting sponsored by Caracol to stimulate debate on the annual production of film, radio and television in Cuba has started successfully, and the participants' opinions have confirmed it.
