The role of Cuban journalists to raise awareness on the Cuban population about an economic and tax culture, has become a social need that requires the joint efforts of press professionals.
This was one of the main ideas expressed at the 11th Written Press Festival held in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba. Journalists of that region from Sierra Maestra weekly newspaper, the Cuban News Agency and Prensa Latina, News Agency as well as several journalism students took part in the debates.
Journalist Miguel Angel Gaínza presented the results of surveys carried out to test locals’ knowledge of economy. They brought to light the poor knowledge about fundamental indicators such as income, average wages and productivity. He also explained that the press is ideal for educating people for its capacity to call to analysis and reflection.
Liliet Dominguez Quevedo, a journalist from the Cuban News Agency, criticized the lack or rigor when comparing sources in journalism. This can result in a lack of credibility to the media and journalists, she noted.
Other elements widely discussed were the respect to readers. Journalists call to strive in order to reach the ordinary people and the way their feelings and problems are reflected in the media. These were some of the elements included in the analysis carried out at the 11th Press Festival.
