Young journalist Jose Roberto Loo, from the Radio Mambi station in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, received the Gilberto Caballero Almeida Scientific Journalism Award, in the Radio reporting category, in acknowledgement of the many creative reports he had produced that reflect the scientific work in the province.
Loo, who graduated recently, received the recognition at the 14th Gilberto Caballero (1941-1996) in Memoriam Competition awarding ceremony on Monday, November 1st, in Havana.
At the important competition other journalists were given honorary mentions, including Reidle Aguilar, from Radio Estereo Centro Villa Clara, and Martha Reyes from CMKS Radio Trinchera Antimperialista in the eastern province of Guantanamo.
Of the 611 works submitted to the scientific competition, 23 were awarded and 32 were given honorary mentions.
The Award to a Life of Achievement, established in 2010, was granted to journalist Barbara Avendano from the Bohemia magazine, in recognition of her commendable work in spreading news on science, technology and the environment.
Alexis Rojas, a Cuban News Agency journalist in Holguin, was granted the National Award in the written press category, while in the television category the award went to journalist Maria del Carmen Fuentes from Camaguey. Juventud Rebelde newspaper correspondent in Pinar del Rio Daymi Diaz won in the on-line journalism category.
At the closing ceremony, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment Lina Dominguez congratulated the awarded journalists and highlighted the significance and application of the scientific and technological advances in increasing the cultural level of the people, from a critical and profound perspective.
Since 1997 the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) and the Scientific Journalism Circle of the Association of Cuban Journalists (UPEC) have been organizing the Gilberto Caballero Scientific Journalism Competition yearly, with the purpose of encouraging quality research and spreading news on scientific, technological and environmental issues.
This completion is dedicated to Gilberto Caballero (1941-1996), promoter of science and journalist and the former president of the UPEC Scientific Journalism Circle, founded in 1980.
The annual competition is attended by journalists, scientists and communicators who have published and spread articles, stories, reports and interviews focusing on the development of science, technological innovation and the environment in newspapers, the Internet and radio and television stations.
