December begins and, in addition to the announcement of the cool temperatures of the winter days reigning over Havana, the Cuban airwaves bring everything about the 33rd Havana Film Festival, which kicks off today with the participation of 120 films which will try to take home the Coral Awards.
Cultural program A buena hora from Radio Taino Station will inform about all the events unfolding during the days of the festival. It will also feature interviews, synopsis of the movies and documentaries in contest. It will also report everything on the showcases held during the 33rd Havana Film Festival.
Morning news program Haciendo Radio from Radio Rebelde station reported that Argentinean comedy Un cuento chino (a load of baloney), starring Ricardo Darín will open the film fiesta. On its part, CMBF National Music Radio Station also commented that this film was one of the most viewed in Argentina this year.
Un cuento chino tells the story of Roberto, who finds a Chinese man called Jun roaming around the streets of Buenos Aires looking for his only relatives alive. The cast is completed by Muriel Santa Ana, Huang Hung-Sheng, Iván Romanelli, Vivian Jaber and Javier Pin.
Cuba will be represented this year by fiction full-length films Chamaco by Juan Carlos Cremata; Juan de los Muertos, second film by Alejandro Brugués; Marina by Enrique Álvarez; and Casa vieja by Lester Hamlet. Habanastation by Ian Padrón, which was acclaimed by both the public and critics, will compete for Best Opera Prima.
Havana moviegoers will have the chance of enjoying 14 collateral showcases with premieres from Spain, France, Poland, German and Norway. Showcases also include the premiere of 21 opera primas from Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Argentina. Tributes during the festival will be dedicated to the International School of Cinema and Television in San Antonio de los Baños, to Cuban filmmaker Humberto Solas, and Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
December 1st is Radio Hosts Day. And Cubans will put all their talent to inform and suggest about the movies screened in this new edition of the film festival. There is no doubt; the Havana Film Festivals days also arrived on the Cuban airwaves when December begins.
