
The opening of the Conference on January 28th will constitute a tribute by all Cuban communists to National Hero Jose Marti on the 159th anniversary of his birth.
The Cuban Communist Party (PCC) began its First National Conference on Saturday. It was presided over by Raul Castro, President and First Secretary General of the party. The opening speech at the meeting, taking place in Havana's Convention Palace, was given by José Ramón Machado Ventura, second secretary of the Central Committee of the party.
Machado said that all suggestions,opinions and views expressed by the Cuban Communists during the stage prior to the meeting will be submitted for debate by delegates participating at the meeting.
The party leader also referred to the 159 anniversary of the birth of the Cuban Apostle, José Martí, being celebrated today January 28th. He also recalled the founding by Marti of the Cuban Revolutionary Party back in 1892, the historical precedent of out current top political group.
According to the meeting's agenda, participating delegates will assess the performance of the political organization with an objective and critical approach.
The draft document to be discussed at the event, whose last version was published in October, was debated in over 65,000 meetings by members of the Communist Party and the Young Communist League. More than one million opinions stemmed from such discussion, which resulted in the modification of 78 out of 96 main objectives, and the addition of another five issues. All 811 delegates to the Conference already analyzed, at regional gatherings held in early January, the proposed modifications.
