Cuban health workers to Chile

A Cuban medical brigade is traveling to Chile on Tuesday where it will assist the victims of an earthquake that shook this nation on Saturday.

Cuban Health Minister Jose Ramon Balaguer and Chilean Ambassador in Cuba Gabriel Gaspar saw the 27-people brigade off in Havana.

The contingent is composed of 11 doctors of different specialties as general medicine, intensive care, surgery, orthopedics, internal medicine and anesthetics.

The Minister recalled that the departure of Cuban medical personnel to Chile represents a historic event, due to its significance and high sense of human solidarity. Balaguer highlighted the importance of the Henry Reeve Contingent of Doctors Specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics, which constitutes a symbol of solidarity.

He highlighted the work of its members in Haiti, which was devastated by an earthquake on January 12 that caused the death of 200,000 people.

The Henry Reeve contingent is currently working on the prevention of outbreaks of diseases, as malaria and dengue, through a vector control and a sanitary-epidemiological campaign.
