Cuba improves rehabilitation of dental -maxillofacial services Print E-mail

Since its creation in 1999, The Support Network of Rehabilitation of Face and Dental- Maxillofacial Prosthesis in Cuba have given medical assistance to 12. 000 patients all over the country, announced doctor Alfredo Alvarez, head of the Cuban national program.

Alvarez emphasized that these procedures allowed to save at least $125 000 000, because these kind of surgeries were usual in development countries, which costs exceeds almost $11 000 for each patient.

The general director highlighted the importance of these medical services to the Integrated Health Program for Latin American and Caribbean nations and it has been benefited more than 770 patients from 34 countries, including Portugal, Guinea Bissau and Pakistan. Among the future projects concerning this issue is the conclusion of an epidemiologic research for all provinces to investigate the patients, determine their location, the magnitude of the problem and the new strategies.

Alvarez emphasized this research took place in Havana, Matanzas, Villa Clara and the special municipality Isle of Youth and will be extended for all the country. 

Renowned experts from 17 countries, including Cuba attend to the Tenth Latin American Meeting of Rehabilitation of Face and Dental-Maxillofacial Prosthesis, which session in the Center of Medical and Surgical Research (CIMEQ) in the capital city.

This meeting deals with ocular, orbital, nasal, auricular, maxillary, mandibulate, cranial and other issues, the treatment with radiotherapy, biomaterials as well as psychological aspects and epidemiologic research, emphasized the president of the  organizing committee.

The Cuban national system of attention to people with cranial-maxillofacial deformities guarantees the free treatment to all the patients who are under these conditions, which requires high scientific level procedures.

At present, the CIMEQ constitutes the (National Coordinator Center for the specialty) and in other institutions of Havana, Villa Clara, Holguin.
