Cuba to complete this year 2010 the study of disability in countries members of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), announced in Havana, deputy minister of the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP) Marcia Cobas.
Cuban vice Minister of Health attended the opening of the Fourth Pan American Congress of Child and Adolescent Health, in session until Saturday at the Havana’s Convention Center with the attendance of experts from over 15 countries, including 200 Cuban professionals.
Cobas emphasized that from the beginning of this research in 2001, up to date, have been studied more than a million people in six countries such as: Venezuela, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Bolivia, Nicaragua and Ecuador as well as Antigua and Barbuda and Dominica.
Only one of its kind in the world, psycho-social research, teaching and clinical genetics of people with disabilities, provides 854 variables.
The study is carried out by geneticists, is psychology specialists, psychologists, physiatrists, , doctors, neurophysiologists and neurologists, among others and has also been supported by governments and the Armed Forces, stressed Cobas.
She also said that the world has more than 650 million people with disabilities, of which over 400 million in poor countries and in Latin America only are 85 million.
Marcia Cobas announced that Cuba has trained 882 Master in Genetic Counseling and prepares specialists of other nations.
Cuban once again put on high the symbol of peace, solidarity, sacrifice and love that characterizes the Cuban Revolution.
Doctor Christopher Martinez, president of the congress organizing committee, referred to the national program on mental health of children and adolescents, based on a risk approach, community participation and intersectioral coordination.
