Regarding to health care, Cuba brings a new concept

Over 8 500 young people from 54 countries including the United States have been trained in Cuba by the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) in its six graduations.

Dr. Juan Carrizo, Rector of the institution explained that the above total, this year, 1400 new doctors graduated from more than 40 nations.

In this way this group of graduated doctors will help to improve the health situation of their countries realizing the premise that a better world is possible.

"Today when all over the world can be seen acts of horror, savage aggression against human beings, nuclear missiles that threaten to destroy what in the history of mankind people have built with so much sacrifice, these young people are raised with their white coats to heal and save lives, "he said.

Carrizo praised the noble idea of the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, who early foresaw the need to develop human resources as the only way to develop the nation, and recalled his phrase when he sentenced "Cuba will be a nation of men of sciences."

There are currently almost 75 000 doctors, which Cuba is considered the country with more health professionals per inhabitants, one for every 150.

The idea of this project was conceived by the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro to address the damages caused by Hurricanes George and Mitch, which hit Central America in late 1998.
