Fidel Castro received on Sunday morning in Havana a delegation of “Colombian people for Peace” Organization led by the Senator of Colombia Piedad Cordoba in order to fulfill an agreement between Piedad and Fidel that was carried during the Colombian Senator’s visit in Cuba where both leaders analyzed possible contribution of the strugglers for peace in their attempt to avoid the war foreseeing as a world threat of inestimable consequences.
Piedad was accompanied this time by other five human rights defenders: Jesuit Priest Javier Giraldo, Carlos A. Ruiz, Danilo Rueda, psychologist and University professor Hernando Gomez, and filmmaker Lisandro Duque. During the exchange of views on the regional and world situation, Fidel stressed that he expects a man like Obama, Christian-Muslim of origin- characteristic that makes the Colombian senator be sensitive to Obama- is able to listen to the voices of those who are making their great efforts in favor of peace and they can dissuade US president from not giving the final order.
Fidel said the visitors that on his birthday, August 13, he had shared with some struggles comrades, and asked them if they expected the war could be stopped after the stipulated period by determination of United Nations Security Council. “We were finished off if we did not held out any hope,” Cuban president said and assured to be convinced that people can join together when they are awarded that their actions in favor of peace could save them and all of us.
And Piedad gave the companions her impressions on the first meeting with the Comander some days ago: “Fidel is able to see Obama as a person that has different characteristics -mixed by chance- relating to his origin, which represent religiosities. So, Fidel ‘s request would be a call for that man becomes a sensitive person and to avoid the war.”
The Colombian senator was excited at the end of the meeting that lasted over two hours, where Fidel presented the Colombians with autographed copies of his book “the strategic battle”. She reported: “This is like a second chance that life and history is giving us. The fact that Fidel is still alive is like if the great God was saying: Well, he is here, so you have another opportunity. As the Cuban leader has always said, if are not together we can not keep us strong, and nothing can be achieved by force. We are living times of good sense and acting through politics. I think that life is giving us that gift.”
