Nearly 700 thousand workers along their relatives and people are staging a huge march to commemorate International Workers Day in this eastern Cuban province. Celebrations here are being presided over by Cuban first vice-president Miguel Diaz Canel and local government, Communist Party officials and representatives of youth and grassroots organizations.
Bearing banners and flags, the huge march began with enthusiasm, led by a block made up of the health workers, followed by other sectors of Cuban society.
The general secretary of the Cuban Workers’ Confederation in Santiago, Maria de los Angeles Cordero said the call to the demonstration was aimed at staging a more patriotic and revolutionary march full with colors.
“We are marching to show the world our support of the Venezuelan government and its president Nicolas Maduro, who has continued the revolutionary legacy of eternal Commander President Hugo Chavez,” Cordero stressed.
The central May Day celebrations kicked off at 7:30 at Havana’s Revolution Square presided over by President Raul Castro.
