This year, Cuba, with the support of the international community, will once again be forced to denounce and call upon the U.S. government at the UN General Assembly for maintaining its economic, commercial and financial blockade against the Island. This will happen on October 26, as announced by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez on Wednesday in Havana, while presenting to the national and foreign press the island’s report to the 65th period of sessions of this organ, on the need to put an end to this policy imposed by Washington for half a century now.
Although U.S. imperialism and the mass media at its service are trying to offer the world the image that Obama’s administration has made this policy more flexible by away of a group of measures, the truth is that it has remained intact and that its criminal essence has not changed.
For this reason, the fact that on September 3 the president himself extended for another year the ban on U.S. companies to do business with the island was not an amazing or spectacular news for Cuba. This is a routine procedure for the occupants of the White House, in conspiracy with the Cuban-American mafia.
The Cuban document to the UN General Assembly, as in previous years, includes solid and irrefutable arguments and updated figures on how affected the social and economical sectors are in the country, and its impact on the quality of life of the population.
However, the mainstream media in the United States and corporate media in Europe and others parts of the world usually silence, ignore or distort the fact that the blockade is the main cause of the problems Cuba has been facing over the last five decades, more severely after the collapse of the socialist bloc and the intensification of US aggressions against the island.
If we don’t take this reality or principle as a starting point, we can hardly understand the reasons for so many sacrifices, efforts and everyday anxieties on the part of the Cuban people and for so many financial and material shortages, and why Cubans are forced to tighten their belts and be more austere, rational and efficient in production and services, and resort to the replacement of imports, and the increase of exports and saving, among other imperatives.
Therefore, we can not allow subjective deficiencies -like lack of organization, discipline, exigency, control and planning- to be added to these limitations, amid the impact of the world crisis.
In countless occasions, President Raul Castro, besides criticizing these phenomena, has insisted on foreseeing everything, in order to avoid improvisations, waste of resources, greater discomfort in the population, and irreparable damages to society and the economy.
But, getting back to the point of the blockade and with the support of the vast majority of the peoples and governments from around the world, we must continue pressuring the Barack Obama administration so it finally -and without concessions or blackmail- puts an end to that policy, which has lasted more than half a century.
That is why Cuba, in defense of its principles, its sovereignty, and the interests of its Revolution, will continue fighting in as many international scenarios it can denounce and demand the end of this economic, commercial and financial war, and will also continue its ideological struggle to counteract the anti-Cuban media campaigns.
From September 15 until late October, amid urgent tasks like those of contributing to prevent a nuclear war threatening world peace, the struggle for the release of the five antiterrorist fighters unjustly imprisoned in the United States, and the execution of a process of labor and wage reorganization, the island will show that the blockade cannot last any longer, for being unjust, immoral, criminal and retrograde.
