The historic leader of the Cuban Revolution spoke to thousands of CDR members in the capital.

The Cuban people know that the Revolution began on January 1st, 1959, and that we have just started; that we’re writing the first pages of the great book of the history the Cuban people is writing, said Revolution leader Fidel Castro in his address to the some 20,000 CDR members gathered in front of the Presidential Palace (today the Museum of the Revolution) to recall the creation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution 50 years ago, on January 28, 1960.

The speech delivered 50 years ago, in which Fidel called to create in each block a system of collective vigilance that could face imperialism and the campaigns of distortions about the reality of the Revolution, was recalled during the meeting of the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party with the CDR members.

Fidel reminisce about the throwing of small homemade bombs that day -September28, 1960- very close to the place where the rally was being held. For each of those bombs, he said, we have built schools and cooperatives, we nationalized a U.S bank, we withdrew hundreds of thousands of oil barrels from the United States, we turned garrisons into schools, we created a new revolutionary law, and we supplied at least 1,000 militiamen with arms.

These long years of struggle against the imperialism are symbolized by the resistance of this Cuban people and the role played by its organization -the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution. In this regard, Fidel asserted that it has been a long and hard struggle, since our Revolution has faced the most powerful empire in the world, the most powerful nation in terms of economic and military resources, an arrogant country blinded by its power, a barbaric imperialism, he commented.

We are here, stated Fidel, in the front line, we’re a small country of limited economic resources, fighting this honorable struggle face to face, determined to maintain its sovereignty and for its destiny.

Likewise, he recalled the warnings made by Cuba in the United Nations Organization to the underdeveloped nations so they get rid of the imperial monopoly that still undermines them.

The world is getting a real idea of our people, a better idea than the one it had, said Fidel, and that’s because of the achievements of this people. We belong to a great minute of human history, to a decisive hour of human race; we are more than ourselves, we are a people, we are a nation, we are an idea, he pointed out.

No one should think that future years will be of peace, emphasized Fidel. The Revolution has a long and hard struggle ahead; easy things are not the ones bearing the best fruit in the end. Hard things are those worth doing for the lives of the peoples. We have to unmask the imperialist enemy before the rest of the world, said Fidel during the rally for the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution.

We have fulfilled our duty and you will continue keeping the promise made that eternal night, concluded the Commander in Chief.

The national meeting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution, held in front of the former Presidential Palace (today the Museum of the Revolution) was attended by the National Coordinator of the CDRs, Juan José Rabilero, delegations from different nations, CDR founders, representatives of political and mass organizations, and relatives of the five Cuban heroes unjustly imprisoned in the United States for fighting terrorism.
