Undersea fiber-optic cable between Cuba and Venezuela
The undersea fiber-optic cable between Cuba and Venezuela will be operational in July 2011, with the purpose of achieving greater progress and increasing the speed and quality of the island’s communication and connection services several times over, according to official sources.
Cuba’s Deputy Minister for Computing and Communications said on Friday that the cable will improve info-communication services “to confront future developments.” Besides contributing to the promotion of cooperation ties between the two nations as of July 2011, the project will also strengthen national sovereignty and security, pointed out the official.
For his part, Waldo Roboredo, vice-president of Telecomunicaciones Gran Caribe S.A., the Cuban-Venezuelan joint venture that will operate the undersea cable covering a distance of 5,340 kilometers, explained that “the island will multiply its current data, image and voice transmission speeds three thousand times.”
He added that the undersea fiber-optic cable will also play an important role of “social exchange” between Cuba and Venezuela, and will reduce satellite connection costs by 25 percent.
Due to the commercial, economic and financial blockade the US has imposed on the island for almost 50 years now, Cuba’s Internet connections are made by satellite. This situation implies that the access to this service is slow, expensive and limited.
According to the expert, the project requires an investment of 70 million US dollars, with a life span of 25 years.
