Due to the US blockade, Cuba has had to reduce the frequency of its publications in Braille, which has an adverse effect on the blind. The United States prevents the island from purchasing from that country’s suppliers the special paper needed for printing with this method, which should be bought in European and Asian markets, thus making its transportation more expensive.
José Miguel Ramos, editor of the recreational cultural center of the National Association of the Blind told ACN that, for this reason, the Faro magazine and the bulletin of that organization, which were bimonthly publications, now have to be printed every four months.
He explained that the production of books in Braille also had to be reduced, which damages the bibliographic collections of libraries and special reading areas for the blind and the visually impaired in the entire country.
Ramos added that the import of spare parts for the equipment used to print documents with this system is also hampered by the absurd US policy.
