Cuba is one of the most advanced countries in immunology field, stated in Havana President of Latin American Society of Immunology, Dr. José Luis Aguilar from Peru.
Aguilar highlighted that despite economic limitations, the results in research and technological advances has turned Cuba into a reference country for the world, mainly for Latin America.
The scientist, who participated at the Ninth Immunotherapy Workshop with the participation of over a hundred experts from 20 countries, enhanced the significance of this event held in Cuba, sponsored by the Molecular Immunology Center (CIM), which develops monoclonal antibodies and vaccines for cancer treatment.
Aguilar expressed the interest of his country in applying these drugs which have been approved by Regulatory Boards and announced that in year 2012 the Immunotherapy Regional Congress will take place in Peru where Cuba will present its experiences.
Dr. Agustin Lage, director of the Molecular Immunology Center noted that specialists from Italy, France, Australia, Germany, Spain, Israel, Canada and the United States, among others, attended the Immunology Basic Forum and the meeting was a good venue for updating knowledge in terms of ways of upgrading patients’ life quality and life expectancy .
Lage stressed that the Center aforementioned has developed therapeutic vaccines for different types of cancer and monoclonal antibodies for head, neck brain and esophagus tumors, and said that medical tests are being carried out sucessfully on another eleven types of cancer including lung and cervical cancer.
The Cuban expert announced that the registered vaccine for lung cancer is under further investigations aimed at pinpointing other locations of malignant tumors.
During five days, the specialists were updating facts related to the causes that induce spreading of tumors, as well as the way of modifying the immune system to block malignant cell growth and spreading.

Experts from several countries agreed that reaching the abovementioned goals in a sucessful manner will turn advanced cancer into a chronic disease such as hypertension and diabetes, thus increasing the patients’ life expectancy.
