When the Granma yacht and its 82 expedition members left the Mexican port of Tuxpan, they set course to the East to go to Cuba: it is precisely in that direction where the sun comes out from. This was something symbolic, because the young revolutionaries led by Fidel were carrying the sun in their minds and hearts: that of the liberation of their homeland to then take a new path. They got caught in a storm on the way, something unusual in that time of the year, at the end of the day yet another symbol of the fates and vicissitudes that their emancipating effort would face during the Liberation War and then in the course of the process of changes required by the Cuban society at the time. Like in all human endeavor, life shaped revolutionary thinking and action.
The arrival of the Granma Yacht to Las Coloradas, the setbacks and victories, provided to Cuba and its Revolution with experiences for the achievement of victory and its subsequent consolidation. The celebration of this event is a cause for reflection, in addition to being a moment to recall those who devoted their youth and gave their lives for emancipation.
Without the Granma expedition and the attack on the Moncada Garrison and the struggle in mountains and cities, Cuba would not be what it is today. For over half a century, inspired by Marti and led by Fidel and Raul, our reality illuminates the path of justice. The great virtue of the Cuban revolutionary event stems from its example to the world as a sign of its determination to defend sovereignty.
In a true and profound revolution, we have the capacity to admit our mistakes and to propose solutions, united, openly and without reservations. What defines the popular nature of a historic process is its ability to consult with all members of society and make decisions with regard to the courses imposed by reality in each moment. It’s in this way that the discussion of the Guidelines for the Sixth Congress of the Communist Party Congress -an event that in essence will be the Congress of the Cuban Nation- is taking place.
The Granma Yatch set sail to a new dawn 54 years ago to fill Cuba with new daybreaks, the ones lighting up our present tasks and illuminating the future. Cuba is in constant renewal, from our Mambi struggles to the Moncada attack, the Granma expedition and the Sierra Maestra combats. We are and we will be a country that despite all difficulties and the storms threatening the planet -our common home- accepts and assumes its challenges. Aware of our achievements and the justice that have inspired them, aware of our errors and new realities, we continue going along the path we have chosen convinced of the perfectibility of our social model, because the people are the major figure of our history.
