The 32nd edition of Havana’s International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema opened its doors to about twenty films of the region that had the social, historic and political situation of our countries as their main theme, and the screenings of materials from Brazil, Argentina and Mexico excelled.

Once again, like in previous festivals, Brazilian cinema attracted hundreds of followers of the seventh art, with four movies that filled the capital's main halls, where Elvis and Madonna, by Marcelo Laffitte, Malú en bicicleta, by Flavio Tambellini, Extraños, by Paulo Alcantara, 180 grados and Curitiba Cero Grado, by Eloi Pires, were shown.

Argentina, Mexico and in a smaller scale Uruguay, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic, were also represented in the meeting of movie buffs in Havana. From the land of "Eva Peron", five films demonstrated the interest this cinema sparks off in Cubans: El recuerdo de los daños, Paco, la punta del iceberg, Allabay, el hombre sin miedo, Caño dorado and Cinco, in which on this occasion social conflicts and the issue of sexuality converged.

The film Del amor y otros demonios named after the novel by Nobel Literature Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez awoke great interest among enthusiasts of the big screen during the 32 International Festival of New Latin American Cinema. In a very subtle way, filmmaker Hilda Hidalgo, a graduated from the International Film and Television School in Cuba, brings us closer to this literary plot, between the chiaroscuros of the atmosphere and a camera from a window that reveals the beauty of a city bathed by the Caribbean Sea, and the impressive love story between a girl and a young priest.

Havana Eva, by the Venezuela-Cuba-France trinomial, and from our island the films José Martí, el ojo del canario, Casa Vieja, Larga distancia and Boleto al Paraiso, caused great impression on the public, which packed movie theaters showing once more that Cuban films are their favorites.

Boleto al Paraiso, the latest film by Gerardo Chijona, has been selected to participate in the Sundance Film Festival, which will take place from January 20th through the 30th, 2011, in Park City, Utah, in the United States. This Festival was founded by actor and director Robert Redford, and it is one the most important cinematographic events of the world.
