CartelThose who attended the 32nd edition of Havana’s International Festival of the New Latin American Cinema had the opportunity to enjoy a large number of films from our region in December. One of them was “La vida útil” by prominent Uruguayan filmmaker Federico Veiroj, which won the Coral Award for his original capacity to reflect in a special way, by making an excellent use of cinematographic resources, a touching declaration of love, while Chile’s “Post Mortem” was the material that won the largest amount of awards in this film fiesta.

With this movie, Chilean Pablo Larraín walked away with the Second Coral Prize, and also won in Best Script, Best Actress -Antonia Zegers, and Best Actor -Alfredo Castro. It’s a film of a few words and many gestures that focuses on the life of a man who works at a morgue in Chile in 1973 and falls in love with a dancer. His treatment of the social environment of a country in turmoil in the face of a coup is impressive, and that of the autopsy performed on Chilean President Salvador Allende is also of great impact.

The third Coral Award went to the feature film “Las buenas hierbas” by Maria Novaro, which also won in Best Original Music. Also for Mexico was the prize in Photography -"Chicogrande” by Damian Garcia-, and in First Work, given to the film “Alamar,” by Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio.

”Chamaco,” by Cuban Juan Carlos Cremata, and “Las Acacias,” by Argentinean Pablo Giorgelli, won and shared the Post Production First Copy Grand Prize. Although Cuba won few awards in this edition of the Festival, most of them were for the film "José Martí: el Ojo del Canario " by Cuban Fernando Pérez who won the Coral Prize in Direction, Best Artistic Direction and Best Poster.

For ten days, cinema lovers enjoyed some 500 films, coming from Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil, and of course Cuba, the host country. Also of interest for the public were the screenings of different nations, among which Spain, Italy, Great Britain and Poland excelled.
