Cuban health aid workers in Haiti
We know that statistics are just numbers, but these numbers always support a task, a labor. Statistics can complement actions.
When we've spoken about the Cuban Medical Mission we've wanted to reflect the effort, professionalism, and dedication etc. They've earned the highest praise here and any place in the world where they have brought unconditional solidarity to those in need. There are endless examples.
Taking into account these statistics today in Haiti there are 1 429 health aid workers, from them 792 are Cubans and 637 from other countries, graduated from the Latino American Medicine School.
From last January 12th until present days, this medical brigade provided medical attention to 94 million 619 people and they have made more than 4 thousand surgical procedures, from them 2 183 are surgeries.
According to statistics, currently the main health care has been directed to infectious and parasitic diseases, of which highlights the acute respiratory infections, skin lesions, acute diarrhea diseases, intestinal parasites, Malaria and Typhoid Fever.
Preventing is the first task in this post-earthquake stage, consequently almost 50 000 people have been vaccinated with Tetanus Toxoid including about 25 600 people who live in the settlements of Puerto Principe ; which have been applied in addition Duple and Antitifica vaccines against the measles and rubella.
Also as part of the tasks currently at 15 days of work, in the eleven rehabilitation rooms that are operating in Leoganne, Carrefour, Croix des Bouquets, Jacmel, Ofatma, Renaissence, Petit Goave, Grand Goave, Mirebalais, la Paz and Arcahaie), were seen to 7 700 patients, who underwent more than 19 300 therapeutic applications.
The vector control continued. It has been visited a total of 236 settlements were affected, dominated by high rates of mosquitoes, flies and rodents. For reducing them, in those places has been applied and has treated the rodenticide. Local farms of insects were destroyed and have been provided educational activities for disease prevention.
The numbers are disturbing to read so much as to say them, but to do justice to this army of white coats, composed of professional men and women revolutionaries, committed and supportive, who spare no effort to make the best of himself for any human being you need anywhere on the planet.
They are the result of a revolution, as Fidel said that "for over 50 years is larger than ourselves.
Somehow or another, our modest work has sought to highlight some.
