The devastating image of the earthquake in Haiti

The geological surrealism was presented with its pathetic consequence of pain. La Espanola Island was shaken by the most devastating earthquake of the century in the western part of the island. The catastrophe leaves behind irreparable losses of lifes and damage in a country that for almost 200 years in the nation which could not raise up either the foreign threat. The images scare as well as the intention of those who take them, showing the almost apocalyptic reality as the same way it revels a horror film.

The geographical, ethnic, political and cultural breaking is in addition to the geological disaster in a country where the erosion has tainted more than the 60% of its territory for the haphazardly logging, only just over 39% of its land is arable and a mineral wealth badly deceased. Only the weather and a few tiny beaches are the sources of income to which is added the mining of bauxite, some coffee exports, foreign-owned textile plants and colorful crafts. Behind remained their songs and dances and that attract tourists lies a nation where only works half of the population of working age and life expectancy exceeds just over 50 years.

Today the world has turned their gaze toward Haiti. Why such seemingly inexplicable disaster? What independence in its first stage is intended to be a monarchy today as empress’s misery, destruction and despair? Hopefully the innumerable voices that have begun to rise up and put an end to this sad reality are not chimerical songs and decide together, and geopolitical unpretentious, above all to human sensibility.

Like yesterday and today many more Haiti needs to be lifted from the rubble of their wounds architectural and social and human reason also demands that it be lifted from the rubble and injuries caused by the theft of the old European powers, even after declared independent, will be disputed. Coveted by the old cities of France, Britain and Spain, later in the first half of the twentieth century was occupied by the United States (1915 - 1930) in what was another obstacle to its long and narrow path towards identity and, if it appears little the obscurantist tyranny of the Duvalier clan.

From a geological wound can save a people, costing perhaps generations, but it is harder revitalize its national spirit if it, in conditions like those in Haiti suffers, in addition to what nature imposes, the grotesque aspects of the history.

Its people, mostly illiterate, require collaboration in learning to read and write, and thus become more aware citizens in their necessary internal integration process. The joint assistance in health that offer sustained Cuba and the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America is, for years, inspired by the ideal of nation-building of the Haitian people.

Haiti is a nation like all others, human and moral capacity to rise and find alternatives that guide you to their development. In that nation, poor and desolate forever today, in gratitude we owe much of our development of coffee. Many of its children came in the late nineteenth century farmers and laborers to settle permanently in our soil and provide their industry in search of a hope too.

The Haitian influence In Cuba is everlasting with the presence of unforgettable personalities such as Martha Jean Claude, who was an acclaimed figure in the Cuban radio and Television. The relevant soap operas as “El Compadre General Sol” by Jacques Stephen Alexis and “Gobernadores del Rocio” by Jacques Roumain have called the attention of the radio audience for years. What’s more, Haiti has been a nation for our intelligentsia inspiring: Alejo Carpentier, novelist, poet, musicologist, essayist and man of the Radio, was seduced by the charm of the nearby island when he wrote his novels "El reino de este mundo” and “El siglo de luces”, both versions of our antennas. The vocation to surrealism and his passion for the real-Carpentier made wonderful discovery in Haiti still inexhaustible source of historical and literary material. Haitian blood flowing today by many veins of Cuba, so now your pain is our grief.

In this hour Haiti moans and cries out for decisive help to heal their wounds and close the bleeding arteries where it is a nightmare for not reaching definitions. This is an opportunity to operate the tools of compassion and solidarity that sustained after the pain, will open the doors on Easter Island to the east of Paso de los Vientos a glimmer of hope. Cuba is consistent with that ideal for healthy gratitude human vocation and rectitude of principle.
