Nelson Mandela:an example of strength and indomitable spirit
The Committee on Foreign Affairs of the People's Power National Assembly of the Republic of Cuba agreed today in extraordinary session, held every year on July 18 as International Day of Nelson Mandela.
The decision follows the call by the UN General Assembly on November 10, 2009, to commemorate the birthday of the renowned international South African patriot, for his outstanding contribution to the elimination of the apartheid regime in his country and the liberation and African unity.
The Cuban Parliament document highlights the example of strength and indomitable spirit of Mandela, who could not be bent by those who imprisoned him for 27 years in harsh conditions in prisons in his country and his exemplary life dedicated to service of humanity.
It was also the meaning for the people of the Greater Antilles of the figure of the legendary African leader, who has always shown special sympathy for the island and a close friendship with Fidel Castro, forged in the common struggle for the noble causes.
In an aside to reporters, Deputy Magalys Llort, mother of Fernando Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five unjustly imprisoned in the United States, said that Mandela is an inspiration to his son and his companions.
It's a light on the road after 12 years of torture by the incarceration of our children, three of whom gave their contribution to the liberation of Africa, he said.
The Parliament urged the U.S. president, Barack Obama, whom he has African roots, to draw on the example of Mandela and free Fernando, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, René González and Gerardo Hernández.
